What should I do if I’ve disturbed asbestos?

Short answer

If you think you have disturbed asbestos, stop work immediately, leave the area and keep others out, and avoid sweeping or vacuuming, which spreads fibres. Close internal doors, gently damp down visible dust if safe, remove and bag contaminated clothing, and arrange professional air testing and clean-up before reoccupying the space.

In the first few minutes

Stop whatever caused the disturbance. Get people and pets out of the room and shut the door. Do not use a domestic vacuum or brush — that aerosolises fibres. Open a window to the outside only if it does not draw dust into the rest of the property.

Dealing with dust and clothing

If it is safe, lightly mist visible debris with water to weigh down fibres; do not scrub. Remove clothing worn during the disturbance, place it in a sealed bag, and wash separately or dispose of it. Avoid carrying dust through the home.

Get it tested and cleaned properly

Arrange a reassurance air test to measure airborne fibre levels and, if needed, a professional decontamination clean. We can confirm whether the area is safe to reoccupy and issue a clearance certificate.

How worried should you be?

A single short exposure carries a low risk, and panicking does not help — but repeated or heavy exposure is what causes harm, so treat any disturbance seriously and get it assessed rather than guessing.
