Asbestos in Cowley
Cowley sits immediately south of Uxbridge with a small historic core around St Laurence church and a much larger body of 1930s ribbon development along the Uxbridge and Iver roads, filled in with 1950s and 1960s housing and some later cul-de-sac building. The interwar semis and bungalows are the mainstay for asbestos-cement garage roofs, soffits and coal-store or outhouse sheeting. Mid-century properties add textured coatings and boiler-cupboard insulating board, and the proximity to the Grand Union canal and the old industrial fringe means light commercial and workshop buildings with cement roof sheets are scattered through the area. Extension and garage-conversion work is common, which is when the sheeting gets disturbed.
Whatever you’re dealing with, we make Cowley properties safe the right way — identified, proven in the lab, and either contained or removed with paperwork that satisfies lenders, buyers and the HSE.

Asbestos Testing & Air Monitoring in Cowley: FAQs
I want to convert my Cowley garage into a room — what do I need to check?
Check the roof sheets and any wall lining first, because interwar and post-war garages here were routinely built with corrugated asbestos cement and sometimes insulating board partitions to the house wall. Cement sheets are non-licensed removal at roughly £380 to £800 for a single garage; insulating board is licensed work and notifiable to the HSE. A sample test at £50 to £80 tells you which you are dealing with before you price the conversion.
How long does an asbestos test take to come back in Cowley?
A single bulk sample analysed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory is usually reported within one to two working days, with same-day turnaround available if works are held up. The sample itself takes minutes to take safely with the area sheeted and the surface wetted. Do not cut or break a suspect material yourself to get a piece.
How quickly can I find out if a material contains asbestos?
Standard bulk sample analysis is returned within 24 hours, and same-day analysis is available for urgent cases. You receive a UKAS-accredited certificate stating the fibre type, or confirming none is present.
What is an air test for and when do I need one?
Air testing measures the concentration of asbestos fibres in the air. It is used for reassurance after disturbance, for background monitoring, and for the mandatory clearance test after licensed removal before a space can be reoccupied.
