Asbestos in Harmondsworth
Harmondsworth is a small village on the northern edge of Heathrow, best known for its medieval Great Barn, with a modest historic core of cottages and a surrounding fringe of interwar and post-war housing, farm buildings and airport-related units. The older cottages and farm outbuildings are a mixed picture: pre-asbestos original fabric overlaid with mid-century repairs, which is where corrugated cement roof sheets, cement gutters and flue pipes appear. Agricultural and storage buildings on the village edge are among the most reliable places to find large-area asbestos-cement sheeting still in service. Because so many properties here have been let, patched and repaired rather than comprehensively rebuilt, materials are often concealed under later work.
Whatever you’re dealing with, we make Harmondsworth properties safe the right way — identified, proven in the lab, and either contained or removed with paperwork that satisfies lenders, buyers and the HSE.

Asbestos Testing & Air Monitoring in Harmondsworth: FAQs
There is a barn with a corrugated roof on our Harmondsworth plot — is it asbestos?
Corrugated agricultural roofing installed between roughly the 1950s and the late 1980s is very likely asbestos cement rather than fibre cement. It should be sampled rather than guessed at, at £50 to £80 for a single test, because that determines the disposal route. Large-area removal is non-licensed but must be done sheet by sheet without breaking, with waste consigned to a licensed facility.
Can I dispose of a few broken cement sheets at the local tip in Hillingdon?
Household waste sites will sometimes take small quantities of bonded asbestos by prior arrangement only, double-wrapped and booked in, and many refuse it entirely. Broken sheets in particular are treated as higher risk because fibres are already released. The reliable route is a contractor who wraps, transports and consigns the waste properly with paperwork you keep.
How quickly can I find out if a material contains asbestos?
Standard bulk sample analysis is returned within 24 hours, and same-day analysis is available for urgent cases. You receive a UKAS-accredited certificate stating the fibre type, or confirming none is present.
What is an air test for and when do I need one?
Air testing measures the concentration of asbestos fibres in the air. It is used for reassurance after disturbance, for background monitoring, and for the mandatory clearance test after licensed removal before a space can be reoccupied.
